Foster homes, supplies needed for 59 animals seized in Meridian hoarding case Friday

Police seized 59 animals from a feces-covered trailer home in the 300 block of Cherry Lane in Meridian on Friday, and now animal welfare advocates are asking for the public's help in caring for animals.

The name of the 39-year-old woman who was housing the animals has not be released because she has not been charged with a crime, according to Meridian Police Deputy Chief Tracy Basterrechea. The investigation has been forwarded to the Ada County prosecutor, who will determine if the woman is charged with animal cruelty.
The animals that were seized included 27 cats. The remaining 32 animals included rats, chinchillas, a rabbit and squirrel.

Basterrechea said police became aware that a large number of animals were living in the house when someone tried to contact the woman who lives there and noticed a foul odor. Police were notified, and they immediately identified a strong odor of feces..."  More
