Animal hoarding leads to questions

How should you dispose of animal carcasses and animal waste in Highlands County?

It depends on the situation, local officials say.

Such items must be disposed of in an approved solid waste facility, said Tom Higginbotham, the environmental health director at the Highlands County Health Department.

"Those kinds of things go to the (county) landfill all the time," Higginbotham said.

Questions about how to dispose of such waste arose after more than 50 dead parrots, parrot waste and other unsanitary conditions were discovered this week at a property on 200 Turkey Lane southwest of Sebring.

The health department served property caretakers Donnalee Ping and Stewart Scrimshaw with an order Wednesday requiring owner Sandra Chandler to clean up the property within 48 hours. Chandler has health problems and can't clean up the property..." More
