74 dogs, puppies seized in Jackson County, Ga.

Jackson County Animal Control officers and inspectors from the state Department of Agriculture said they seized 74 dogs and puppies from an unlicensed breeding operation between Jefferson and Commerce in northeast Georgia.

Jackson County public development director Gina Mitsdarffer said animal control officers went to a home on Friday after receiving a tip and found rows of kennels in storage buildings, inside a home and outdoors.

Officer said the kennels were filled with nursing and pregnant miniature dogs.

Mitsdarffer said she won't identify the owner until charges are filed.

35 dogs removed from Cornelia home

Animal control officers removed 21 dogs of various sizes and ages from the inside of a house and another 14 from the yard of a Cornelia residence Wednesday.

The home belongs to an elderly lady who currently is hospitalized. A neighbor contacted animal control concerned about the animals.

At the time it was not known how many animals were inside the house or the condition of the residence.

When officers arrived, they found and captured eight dogs running loose outside, found six more in an enclosed, gated backyard and 21 inside in deplorable conditions.

"The dogs themselves are not in horrible health and we are not seeing any major problems - it is just that they have been closed up inside the house without food or water for several days," said animal control officer Brandon Brown. "Most will probably be adoptable."

Dog fighting ring raided in Montgomery County

MOUNT VERNON, GA (WTOC) - Montgomery County authorities have raided what they call a major dog fighting ring.

Sheriff Clarence Sanders said they seized 30 to 35 dogs, which included puppies and grown dogs, they believe were used in the fighting.

He said they'd arrested one man in connection with the raid, which he said took place in nearby Higgston. In addition, he said, a second arrest is pending.

29 Dogs Seized From Suspected Dog Fighting Operation Need Homes

SUWANEE, Ga. -- Twenty-nine dogs that were seized in a raid involving suspected dog fighting and drug trafficking have formally been turned over to the Georgia SPCA.

Officials said the dogs' owner Antonio Monds, 32, had been under surveillance for six months for suspected dog fighting operation, gambling and drugs. Law enforcement, NORRED investigators and GA SPCA emergency response team seized the dogs from the Talbot County property on Wednesday and moved them to an undisclosed location in a nearby county.

Monds surrendered ownership of the dogs to the Talbot County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday. The Talbot County Sheriff’s Department is not equipped to care for animals that are seized so they have now turned over custody of the dogs to the Georgia SPCA. Georgia SPCA director, Joan Sammond said that the dogs are currently undergoing a more thorough evaluation for health and temperament and will be ready to go into rescue as early as next week. At that time the dogs will be fostered with rescue and adopted out as each agency sees fit.

"We will be taking several of the dogs into our Suwanee adoption facility. The rest of the dogs we need to find eligible rescue and humane organizations to take because our facility does not have the space for this many dogs.
